How we spend our days outside, in every kind of Vermont weather.
We go outside in rain, snow, ice, sleet, mud, and wind. Being in Vermont shapes this. Children learn what weather feels like on their skin and how to prepare for it. The goal is simple: understand the elements, enjoy them, and stay safe, comfortable, and happy while you do.
Children learn to be gentle with plants and animals. They find out there is a lot to learn from nature. In a time of climate change and a fragile natural world, we want them to love and respect the earth now, so they know how to protect it later.
Before your child starts, we give every family a four page clothing list. Children come with proper layers so they stay warm and dry in winter and cool and protected in summer. Packing for the day is part of the routine, and the list tells you exactly what to send.
Before heading outside, teachers check that each child has the right layers for the weather. That means boots, jackets, hats, and mittens on cold days. Getting dressed is not a race. Children learn the order of things, from snow pants to zippers, and they practice on their own. Teachers help where help is needed, then step back. We don't take unnecessary risks.
Our teachers love being outdoors. Some ski every chance they get. Some studied environmental science in college. Either way, they bring that love of nature to the children, and sharing it is the part of the job they care about most.
In January and February, our 3 to 6 year olds ski at Cochran's. Children learn to manage the rope tow and t-bar on their own. We give them time and space to figure out how to get up and down independently. The hard work pays off. These kids are great skiers.

What you notice at home is a child who checks the sky before leaving. They know which coat works for sleet and which hat stays on in wind. They are gentle with a bug on the sidewalk. Dressing for the day becomes something they can do, and being outdoors in any weather becomes ordinary instead of a battle.
